Balogun's Double Cross: USA Dreams vs Monaco Realities

Striker's National Allegiance Clash Puts Summer Tournament Plans at Risk

The 22-year-old striker, who opted to represent his birth country over England at the senior international level, is eager to make a significant impact for the USA in the upcoming summer tournaments. Folarin Balogun has been named in Gregg Berhalter’s initial squad for the

Copa America

, hosted in the United States, although his playing time is not guaranteed. Additionally, there's the prospect of winning a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where Balogun is also expected to feature.

Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro has clarified that Balogun will not be permitted to join the USMNT for both tournaments. The club wants to honor their players' wishes while meeting their own needs, including taking vacations before the late-finishing Olympics. Monaco is fortunate not to be competing in the Champions League playoffs, which would have clashed with the Olympics.

Looking ahead, Balogun aims to use these summer competitions to regain form for the upcoming 2024-25 season. His first season at Monaco saw him score eight goals, with some notable penalty misses.
