Belgium

's football federation has announced that Domenico Tedesco will be their new head coach until after the 2024 European Championships.

Tedesco who was appointed as Leipzig manager in December 2021, was sacked by the German club last September. He won the 2022 DFB-Pokal with Leipzig and guided them to the Europa League semi-finals.

The 37-year-old Italian-German football manager has also managed Schalke and Spartak Moscow.

Tedesco released a statement saying:

“For me it is a great honour to be the new head coach of Belgium. I’m really looking forward to the task and I’m extremely motivated. I had a very good feeling right from the first conversation.”

Following Belgium’s elimination from the

2022 World Cup

in the group stage, Roberto Martínez announced that he would be standing down as head coach after six years in charge of the national team. Martinez has since been appointed as Portugal head coach.

Thierry Henry who worked as Martinez's assistant and former Belgium captain Vincent Kompany who is the head coach of Burnley were reportedly early candidates for the Belgium job.

The 2024 Euro qualification stage begins next month and Belgium has to play with Sweden, Austria, Azerbaijan, and Estonia. Belgium will face Sweden on March 24 in their first game.
