Chelsea: "The homophobic 'rent boy' chant has no place in football”

The 'rent boy' chant has long been sung by opposition fans in Chelsea fixtures as it was finally condemned by the FA for its homophobic nature. The Blues welcome the Football Association’s decision over the notorious chant.

After their 2-1 derby loss to Fulham,

Chelsea

has welcomed the FA's decision to class the notorious 'rent boy' chant, which is usually directed at the Blues supporters in their fixtures as a breach of their rules due to its homophobic nature.

The chant has been classed as a hate crime by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and the FA stipulates that the singing of the chant now will result in disciplinary action for clubs.

Chelsea released

a statement

on Friday that read:

"The 'rent boy' chant is intolerable and has no place in football or anywhere else.

"That opposition clubs can now face disciplinary action if their supporters engage in this discriminatory and offensive behavior is a step in the right direction.

"Everyone who chooses to participate in this chant must know their actions have consequences.

"Alongside our No To Hate campaign, we will continue to work with the FA, the CPS, opposition clubs, and our own LGBTQI+ supporter group Chelsea Pride in the pursuit of positive change.

"There is plenty more work to be done, but we won't rest until football is a game where everyone feels welcome."
