Lukaku believes Thierry Henry should be the next Belgium boss
After failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup's knockout stages, Roberto Martinez was dismissed as the Belgium federation announced they are on the hunt for a "serial winner". Lukaku believes Belgium's progress should continue through Thierry Henry.
After reaching the semi-final in the 2018 World Cup,
the Red Devilsstarted their Qatar 2022 campaign with a victory over Canada but they lost by two goals against Morocco in their second match. Their exit was confirmed by a goalless draw against Croatia.
While many believe the nation needs a great change in many aspects,
Romelu Lukakubelieves his nation needs “continuity”, which can be provided through the appointment of
Thierry Henry
as the team's head coach. Henry served more than six years as Martinez’s assistant in Belgium.
Lukaku told
Sky Sport:
"For me, Henry is the next coach of Belgium. There are no doubts. I say it openly: he will be the next coach.
"He has the respect of all the players, he has won everything. He knows how to coach, he knows what we have to do to get there.
"He knows the team, the league, the staff. For me, he is the ideal coach for our national team. Then I don't know who they will take. But I don't think Belgium should start from scratch.
"So far this generation hasn't won, but we have to keep trying to win. He wants to win, and I don't think the federation is going to get a coach who wants to change everything and start from scratch. It's not worth it to me."
