Eden Hazard retires from international football

Belgium captain Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from international football after a group stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

has announced he has decided to retire from international football at the age of 31.

"Today I turn a page. Thanks for your love,"

Hazard wrote on Instagram.

"Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all the joyful moments we have shared since 2008. Today I decided to put an end to my career as an international. The next generation is ready. I'm going to miss you so much.”

Hazard made his debut for Belgium 14 years ago in 2008. He played in 126 matches and scored 33 goals.

Belgium

had a disappointing

World Cup

and was eliminated in the group stage. They lost to Morocco and draw with Croatia in the final game to finish third in Group F. Belgium's manager Roberto Martinez also announced he will leave his job after the World Cup.

Hazard reached the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup with Blegium where they were eliminated by Argentina. Belgium was eliminated by Wales in the quarter-finals at the Euro 2016. Hazard helped Belgium to reach the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup and was voted as the second-best player of the tournament. Belgium once again was eliminated in the quarter-finals stage of the Euro 2020.

From 2015 to 2022, the Real Madrid forward served as the captain of Belgium and won the Belgium player of the year award in 2017,2018, and 2019.
