Inter goalkeeper Onana suspended and dropped by Cameroon FA
After being dropped by Song in Cameroon’s clash against Serbia, Onana has now been suspended from the team altogether
goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped from the Cameroon squad due to disciplinary reasons. Onana was first dropped from the squad with Epassy taking his place in the 3-3 draw against Serbia on Monday but he has now officially been dropped from the squad.
This comes after
Onana’s alleged disagreement with manager Rigobert Song over their playing style in their first match against Switzerland with Song expressing the need to "take a strong action" and claiming that "those that didn't want to be a part of that, well they can be judged.".
The Cameroon Football Association has since released a statement that says:
"Following Rigobert Song's decision, Andre Onana has been temporarily suspended from the group for disciplinary reasons.
"The Cameron Football Federation reiterates its full support to the head coach and his entire staff as they implement the Federation's policy aimed at preserving discipline, solidarity, complementarity and cohesion within the national team.
"FECAFOOT further reaffirms its commitment to create a peaceful atmosphere for the team and to provide them with adequate facilities for outstanding performance."
Although Epassy was a more “traditional” choice by Song, Onana managed to have more touches (26) than any other goalkeepers at the World Cup since 1966.
The controversy may have overshadowed
Cameroon’s unlikely comeback from 3-1 down against Serbia to salvage a point. Cameroon will face Brazil next who have already secured a spot on the knockout stages.
