Lionel Messi: Another World Cup started for Argentina

Argentina captain Lionel Messi says their World Cup campaign has just started after victory against Mexico.

Argentina

would've been eliminated from the World Cup with a loss to Mexico, but

Lionel Messi

came to their help and scored a crucial goal in the 64th minute and then assisted on Enzo Fernández's goal in the 87th minute.

Argentina is in second place in group C with three points and will face

Poland

on Wednesday. Robert Lewandowski’s side is on top with four points, while Saudi Arabia has three points and Mexico has one.

Lionel Messi now has scored eight goals in the World Cups, putting him level with Diego Maradona and behind only Gabriel Batistuta for Argentina.

After the game, Messi who now has scored in six consecutive matches for Argentina said their World Cup has now truly started.

Messi told Argentine TV:

"It was a complicated game to lift ourselves up for, because Mexico played really well, In the first half, we played with intensity, and in the second half, we calmed down a bit and we came back to ourselves.

"We knew that today we had to win, that another World Cup started for us and we knew what to do. We cannot let our guard down now. We have all finals left to play;

we can't make a mistake.

We knew that the response from our fans would be like this and I think we complied. We have been all hand in hand together for a long time.”
