Tunisia 0-1 Australia: First World Cup win for Socceroos since 2010

Australia secured their first victory at a World Cup since 2010 by beating Tunisia on Saturday.

Australia

beat

Tunisia

with one goal at Al Janoub Stadium to move up to second in Group D behind defending champions France with three points.

This is their first World Cup victory since 2010 as it ended their seven-match winless run at World Cups since they beat Serbia in 2010. All three Australia wins at the

World Cup

have been against teams from different continents.

Australia dominated the opening 15 minutes and finally, Mitchell Duke puts them ahead in the 23rd minute. Duke glanced Goodwin’s deflected cross into the net with a header.

Tunisia could score in the 41st minute but Australia’s defender saved his team with a vital block of Drager’s strike.

The team also had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 45th minute but Msakni fired wide of the post from close range.

Australia, on the other side, could score another goal in the 71st minute but Leckie failed to connect with Maclaren’s cross across the face of the goal.

Moments later, Msakni fired two shot toward the near post in the space of a minute, but both times the goalkeeper denied him.

Tunisia had another chance in the 88th minute when Kechrida surged down the right flank and sent a cutback for Khazri, but the striker sent a weak shot straight at the goalkeeper.

France plays Denmark in another Group D match later on Saturday and Australia will play Denmark in their last group-stage match on Wednesday.
