Germany forward Timo Werner ruled out of the World Cup
Leipzig striker Timo Werner is going to miss the World Cup in Qatar after picking up an ankle injury against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday.
has confirmed that
Timo Wernerwill miss the
2022 World Cupafter suffering an ankle injury. Werner was forced off in the 19th minute against Shakhtar on matchday six of the Champions League group stages.
"Timo Werner suffered an ankle injury last night in the win over Shakhtar Donetsk,"
read a club statement.
"Scans today in Leipzig showed that he has unfortunately torn the syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle and will therefore be out for the rest of 2022.”
Germany manager Hansi Flick has reacted to this news and said his absence is a big miss for Germany in Qatar.
He said,
"It's very sad news. I feel really sorry for Timo that he will miss a World Cup that he was determined to play at. Above all though, his absence is a big loss for the team. We all wish him a speedy recovery!”
The 26-year-old Werner returned to Leipzig last summer after a two-year spell at Chelsea. He has scored four goals in nine league appearances and has also scored twice in the Champions League. Werner has scored 24 goals in 55 appearances for Germany.
Germany's first game of the World Cup is against Japan on November 23. Flick's side is in Group E alongside Spain, Costa Rica, and Japan.
