Former Inter player Ivan Perisic says Tottenham first contacted him in March.

The 33-year-old Perisic told Sky Sports:

“I think our first contact was in March, and the second one was in April when I think they won against Arsenal, and it was obvious that maybe they’re going to reach the Champions League.

“I always wanted to play in the Champions League and my wish was also to try to come to the Premier League.

“When they reached the Champions League, we spoke and the deal was done in two days, and it was much easier.”

The Croatian international who used to play at the attacking position explains how his role changed under Conte at Inter.

“With him, I changed my position and he likes to play with three at the back,”

he says.

“At Inter we used to play with 3-5-2 and I was on the left as a wing-back.

“In the beginning, I needed a few games to adapt. It’s really something new after so many years as a winger, but I think later I did well.

“Especially also last season with Inzaghi, because we kept playing the same tactic and now also here we’re going to try to play a similar system.

“I like to play in this position because I have more contact with the ball than as a winger and most of the time I’m facing the goal – and I also like to help the defense. I think it’s the perfect position for me.”

Perisic also reveals he talked with former Tottenham star Luka Modric before signing his contract.

“The first time I spoke with the manager, I also called Luka [Modric] later,”

Perisic reveals.

“I said to him that there is a possibility that I might come to his ex-club and he said to me all of the positive things about the club.

“He used to play at the old stadium and he used to train in the old training camp but everything is new here now, everything is much better and much more modern.

“We're going to wear the same number (14). I asked him for his permission and he said, ‘Okay, you can take it’, and yeah it was fun.”

Perisic made 252 appearances for Inter during seven years and scored 55 goals and provided 49 assists.
