Martinez admits to Espanyol mistakes following 5-1 Brighton defeat

Set to start a revolution at the Catalan club, Espanyol suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday with Espanyol's boss acknowledging the loss as ‘the beginning of a process’.

Martinez left star striker

Raul de Tomas

out of the squad for the friendly, with rumors suggesting the rift between the two is growing as it appears a difference of opinion has led to Martinez isolating him.

The La Liga side’s boss, Diego Martinez told his post-match interview with

Diario AS

:<em>

“We leave very hurt, we played a very bad game.”

“This is the beginning of a process, a process of many changes, long-term changes, that are still in the initial phase.”

“It’s very positive. The team got to know itself better. We have given an opportunity to lots of academy players who today might have played the most demanding game of their careers up until now. That experience goes with them, which is the legacy of this club.”

Starting his coaching career with

Sevilla

as an assistant coach and later Sevilla B coach, where he managed to achieve promotion to Segunda División in 2016, Martínez was named manager of

RCD Espanyol

this summer after 3 years at Granada.

After achieving promotion to the first division with Granada, Martinez became the youngest manager of the 2019–20 campaign with a 7th-place finish in his debut top-flight campaign, qualifying for UEFA Europa League.
