Barcelona sells iconic Cruyff NFT for €678k amid the financial crisis

Barcelona CEO Joan Laporta earlier announced that the club intends to establish its own cryptocurrency and sell a series of non-fungible tokens, and now, the Blaugrana have officially made their first NFT last night for over half a million.

According to

ESPN

, Barca's first official Non-Fungible Token was sold last night, bringing in a reported €678k at a Sotheby’s auction. Accompanied by an orchestra, the mentioned NFT was a 40-second animation of

Johan Cruyff

’s iconic flying goal against Atletico Madrid in 1973.

In addition to the rights to the NFT, the auction winner will be served with a number of additional benefits that the club termed as things ‘money can’t buy’. The supposed ‘digital ambassador’ will have hospitality at Camp Nou for a minimum of five years, having the opportunity to play at

Camp Nou

and also the chance to hand over the ball to the players before a friendly match.

Since

Laporta

's re-election in March 2021, several cryptocurrency firms have contacted Barca about a possible relationship as

the Blaugrana

had to tackle serious financial struggles throughout the last year. Various clubs and athletes across sports have stepped into the NFT market, and the Barca CEO seems to have found an opportunity to tackle the club’s financial crisis.

Helping them win their first European Cup in 1992 in addition to four league titles as a coach, Cruyff played for Barca from 1973-1978 as he is considered one of the guardians of the club's playing style and philosophy.
