Lisandro Martinez officially joins Manchester United for a £56.7m fee

After weeks of negotiations, Manchester United finally beat Arsenal to signing the Ajax defender for a reported £56.7m fee. The Argentine can play centre-back, left-back, and also in central midfield, and is going to reunite with his former Ajax boss, Eric ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The versatile defender will become Man Utd's third summer signing. Tyrell Malacia signed last week from Feyenoord, while Christian Eriksen joined on Friday.

Lisandro Martinez

will join the Red Devils on a five-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months.

Upon signing, Martinez told

Manchester United’s website

:

"It's an honor to join this great football club. I've worked so hard to get to this moment and now that I'm here I'm going to push myself even further.

This summer,

Ajax

rejected two offers from

Arsenal

for Martinez while Mikel Arteta believed he was leading the race for the 24-year-old to lead him finally join the Red Devils.

"I've been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that's what I want to continue at Manchester United. There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that under this manager and coaches, and together with my new teammates, we can do it,”

the Argentine added

.

"I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me. I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do that."

Manchester United

has paid a guaranteed €57.37m for Martinez, with an additional €10m in through add-ons.
