"Ronaldo is a legend!" Varane backs the striker's role in Man Utd

Last season, Raphael Varane only helped Manchester United keep five clean sheets in the league, but he does not regret joining the Red Devils.

Raphael Varane

says he doesn't regret joining

Manchester United

, even though he had a bad first season at

Old Trafford

. He also said Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn't be criticized for his play last season.

After winning a lot of trophies at

Real Madrid

, Varane joined United in August 2021. But he couldn't stop the Red Devils from having the worst defensive record in Premier League history. They gave up 57 goals in 38 games, which put them in sixth place.

The 2018 World Cup winner started for United in

Erik ten Hag

's first preseason game as manager, a 4-0 win over Liverpool. Since then, United has won two more friendly games. In an interview with the BBC, Varane stood by his decision to join United and praised the high-octane style introduced by Ten Hag on their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.

"To get better at football, you have to push yourself," he said. "After 10 years in the same place, I was ready for something new. The Premier League is great, and Manchester United is a great team." There was no question about what I would do. A new season means a fresh start. Confidence is important, and when we lost some games, it hurt our confidence. But I think we could be very good.

"The new boss has a lot of hope. He wants us to have a lot of energy and press high up the field, giving us more space behind us. That might be more offensive, but we like football, so it's a good start."

Varane made 22 Premier League appearances in his first season at Old Trafford, less than central defenders Harry Maguire (30) and Victor Lindelof (28). After United agreed to sign Ajax's Lisandro Martinez, he will have more competition next season.

But the

star says that doesn't bother him, and he praised Maguire's skills after the United captain was booed during a preseason win over Crystal Palace. Varane added, "Competition is good for the team." "Harry is one of our most important players. He is the captain, so it's clear he has many good qualities."

Even though United's results seem to be getting better, the question of what will happen with superstar forward Ronaldo continues to cast a shadow over the new era at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has reportedly asked to leave United for a club in the Champions League. He was criticized for not working hard enough, even though he led United in scoring with 24 goals on all fronts last season. Varane didn't say anything about the 37-year-future, old's, but he slammed these kinds of assessments of Ronaldo's play.

"That argument happened outside the locker room," the defender said. "We know how good he is. We know he's very well-known. So we know that a lot of people will talk about how the team did and how he did. Cristiano is a very good athlete. He's a legend and always good for the team, so playing with him is great."
