Havertz ready to be Chelsea’s no.9 as he talks up Sterling partnership

Kai Havertz has played as a striker before for Thomas Tuchel, and the Germany international wants to show what he can do next season.

's trust at

Chelsea

in Romelu Lukaku's absence and learn from

Raheem Sterling

. Havertz led Chelsea's line when Lukaku was injured or not selected, yet he scored just eight times in 29 Premier League games.

With Lukaku on loan to Inter, Tuchel ruling out a bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, and

Robert Lewandowski

joining Barcelona, Havertz will likely start up top again. Havertz didn't foresee the positional adjustment, but he wants to prove Tuchel wrong.

"I've played many positions throughout the years, but I enjoyed playing number nine last season," he said. "I never envisioned playing there four years ago. I've played it more in the previous two years and like it. I'm adaptable and can play numerous positions up front, but I'm there to score goals and make assists as a number nine.

"We play every three days, so we must constantly be consistent. I also need to be consistent and score as many goals as possible. Dropping a game's level is commonplace. Every game can't have five goals. I strive for consistency. The coach must have faith in me. Sometimes, too. He's trusted me for years. It's good to know a striker like me. Youthful. You must constantly take responsibility when playing. This season, I'll play as much as possible. This year should be better than the previous."

Sterling, who came from Manchester City on a five-year deal last week, can help Havertz improve his goalscoring and finishing. Sterling has scored 27 Premier League goals from inside the box since Pep Guardiola became City coach in 2016. (Harry Kane, 22).

The England international averaged a goal every 179 minutes in the Premier League under Guardiola. Only five players have scored more goals since the 2016-17 season. Havertz called Sterling a "fantastic player." "I heard he has the most goals and assists for Man City in the last five years. That's his story.

"He was fantastic for City and the national team; perhaps he can do so here. He'll aid me and everyone. Every game shows this. He played brilliantly against England at the Euros. Already after a few days, his quality is clear. You can see in training how good he is, how fast he is. He'll aid us."

Kalidou Koulibaly

is Chelsea's second signing under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Havertz is happy to have new ownership after a tough season. Havertz thought the sanctions against Roman Abramovich were "ridiculous" "We all found the club's adjustments unusual, but we made it through.

"I think it helps that we all know one other on the squad and are together in difficult moments. We're a unique bunch. We see that off and on the field. We have many similar-aged young players. We have several seasoned players and work well together. It's clear from the pitch that we're hoping for a spectacular year."
