Rafa Marquez set to return to Barcelona in coaching role at academy

The former defender has agreed to stay with the club for two years.

, has been hired as the new head coach of

Barcelona B

. The club announced that it had hired Marquez on Thursday. The former defender has signed a two-year contract that will keep him in charge of the reserves until 2024.

Marquez was a star player at

Camp Nou

for seven years, from 2003 to 2010. From 2003 to 2010, he was the best player for the club, and with El Tri, he became a big name around the world.

Marquez moved to Barcelona from Monaco in 2003. He was the first player from Mexico to play for the club. During his time at Barcelona, he won

La Liga

four times and helped the team win the Champions League twice.

The Mexican star made 242 appearances for the club before joining the New York Red Bulls in 2010. He then played for Leon, Hellas Verona, and Atlas before retiring in April 2018.

Since he retired, he has worked as the president of the sport for Atlas and as a youth coach for Acala. He starts working at Barcelona on Friday when the players will come back for medicals. The next day, the club says, will be the first day of training.
