Costa Rica becomes final team to qualify for 2022 World Cup

Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup for a third successive tournament as they edged past New Zealand.

beat 10-man

New Zealand

with Joel Campbell's early goal in their intercontinental playoff on Tuesday night to qualify for the

World Cup

in Qatar.

This playoff was between the fourth-placed team in the CONCACAF region and the Oceania confederation winner and was held at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar. This Stadium will host seven matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The former Arsenal striker scored in the 3th minute for Costa Rica. New Zealand equalized in the 39th minute through Chris Wood but VAR ruled out the goal due to a foul in the build-up.

Substitute Kosta Barbarouses was also sent off in the 69th minute after VAR intervention to leave New Zealand with 10-man.

This is for the Sixth time that Costa Rica has qualified for World Cup in their history. They are in Group E at the World Cup with Germany, Japan, and Spain.

Costa Rica's first game will be against Spain in Doha on November 23. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will run from Nov. 21-Dec. 18.
