Rahul Bheke makes history in the AFC Champions League

The Mumbai City defender was the right player for his side during their 2-1 victory over Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in the Group stage game of the AFC Champions League.

Mumbai City FC

pulled off an impressive performance, with

Rahul Bheke

netting the winner for his side in 75th minute of the game.

Aside from assisting his side to be the first Indian team to win a match in the

AFC Champions League

, he had his name on the scoresheet as the competition’s first Indian goalscorer.

The defender had a post-match interview where he was asked about what he took away from the game.

Bheke said:

“We’re extremely happy that we got our first win in the AFC Champions League, so it’s a proud moment for our team as well as for the country. As the coach said, we all are happy. He told us before the game that we have to create history by getting that first win, scoring that first goal, getting that first assist, and keeping the first clean sheet. So, I’m happy for all of it except for the clean sheet. It’s a good result and we all are looking forward to the next game and getting another win.”

He was also pressed about his thoughts before finding the back of the net.

“Obviously, when I go up [the field] for corners or set-pieces, that’s the only chance that I’m getting to score the goals, so I make sure that I convert that opportunity. So, we planned the set-pieces and I was at the right spot, so I’m really happy that I scored the goal and we all are happy that we got our first win.”

The player is from Mumbai and he made history with his goal. He was asked to say his message to the people in India, his family and friends.

“It’s a proud moment for me, for my family, for my team as well as for the city where I belong and I think everyone will be happy because we also got our first win, it’s just that we’re missing the fans here but hopefully we’ll see them in the stands soon. We’ll be playing in front of them soon.”

Despite it being the first win for an Indian club, it was the competition’s first goal by an Indian player. He was quizzed whether he intends to build on that.

“Yes, it’s really important for me that whenever I go forward for set-pieces, I help my team, which is what I did in the ISL season. And now I got my first goal here, so I’m really happy for that and I’ll keep on going like this whenever I get those chances.
