Great Chance - De Bruyne on Mahrez’s miss against Liverpool

Manchester City could have put space between them and their rivals Liverpool on Sunday should they have won the game, but the Belgium international does not blame his team-mate.

Kevin De Bruyne

revealed that

Riyad Mahrez

’s late opportunity to earn a victory for

Manchester City

in the injury time was a “great chance” that was blown. However, he insisted that his team-mate would be praised if his act had paid off.

The Algerian tried to chip

Liverpool

’s shot-stopper Alisson on Sunday, but he missed, not helping his side earn three points from the encounter.

The Belgian, however, did not forget to hail his side’s effort in defending their title. The Belgium international, who netted the opener for his side, was the one who gave Mahrez the ball in the final stages of the match. Although it was hard to be sure of the chance, Mahrez has converted in previous occasions.

"

It's a great chance,"

De Bruyne told

Sky Sports

 in his post-match comments.

"Riyad chose to chip and if it goes in, it's a wonder goal.

"[But] today we played very well, I think we had the upper hand. This is the way we need to play the rest of the season.

Quizzed if the points would benefit City or the Reds more, he said: "It's similar. I know people said whoever wins gets the title. But it's too hard. The schedule is too tough for both teams to win every game, but we will try."

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, told BBC:

"I don't have any regrets. They can miss whatever they want. It was positive. It is football and it happens.

"I'm in love with Riyad [Mahrez]; he is an incredible player and person."
