The Most Expensive Transfers in Football History

As the years go by, football becomes a more and more expensive sport. Just a few years ago, the idea of spending several million pounds on a player transfer from club to club would have seemed ludicrous, but now it’s pretty commonplace!

Even some clubs in lower leagues will dish out huge amounts of cash to bring in the players they’re after.

However, those transfers fade into insignificance when we compare them to the most expensive transfers in football history. If you didn’t know these before, be prepared to have your mind blown by these truly unfathomable amounts of cash.

Supposedly, ‘Financial Fair Play’ rules stop teams from spending too much money so we’re not exactly sure what happened with the following. All we know is that the

odds

on these transfers being topped again any time soon will surely be pretty high…

1.   Neymar, Barcelona to PSG: £199.8 million

When Neymar was at his peak, he was one of the most exciting football players in the world, so it’s no wonder that Paris-based club

PSG

wanted to do everything in their power to get their hands on him. However, no one could have expected the sheer amount of money they were about to spend.

This deal took place in 2017 so when you think about how much it’s worth today, it goes way past the £200 million mark. That’s more than most top-flight teams spend in several years! Neymar never really lived up to his potential at PSG so some might say it was a waste of money. However, he’s still a very high-quality player, and he still plays for PSG to this day.

2.   Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool to Barcelona: £130.5 million

Another team known for having a seemingly infinite pool of money (at least until the past couple of years where they have really started to struggle financially) is Barcelona. They’ve pulled out all the stops with some of the

biggest transfers ever

, and the one that tops the list is that of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018 to the tune of £130.5 million.

Coutinho was one of the best players in the Premier League during his time at Liverpool and excelled for Barcelona for the three years he was there. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he recently signed for Premier League side Aston Villa on a loan deal that nobody saw coming! It’s good to see him back in English football though.

3.   Kylian Mbappe, Monaco to PSG: £121.5 million

PSG are back in our list again, which is no suprise. The last few years has seen them spend eye-watering amounts of money. The fact that their second biggest transfer is the third-most expensive transfer in the world, of all time, says it all.

Mbappe was somewhat of a prodigy as a young player, excelling in football for both Monaco and France, his international team. He turned a lot of heads with his breathtaking playing style and it was that that led PSG to put down the big bucks for him in 2017.

4.   Joao Felix, Benfica to Atletico Madrid: £113.4 million

2019 saw one of the most unlikely and ludicrously expensive transfers for a couple of reasons: the clubs doing the business and the player himself. Joao Felix is never held in the same regard as the Lionel Messis and Cristiano Ronaldos of the world, but he is a heck of a good player and his £113.4 million price tag certainly suggests that.

Atletico Madrid have never been as wealthy as their local rivals Real Madrid so they must have been doing a bit of saving to pull off this lucrative deal.

5.   Ousmane Dembele, Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona: £112.5 million

We arrive back at the Nou Camp once again with Barcelona taking on the remarkable player Ousmane Dembele for a price tag of £112.5 million from German Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund.

When Dembele arrived at the Nou Camp there was a buzz of anticipation in the air, but did he capitalize on it? You bet he did. Ousmane Dembele quickly established himself as one of the best young players in La Liga. The Frenchman was only 20 years old at the time, but it was clear his football abilities were beyond his age as he made mockeries of defenders around Spain and scored a fair few goals in the process with the likes of Lionel Messi by his side.
