‘Empty words’ – Lewandowski responds to Messi's comment on Ballon d’Or

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has labeled Lionel Messi’s comments ‘empty words’ after the Argentinean claimed the Polish striker deserved to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or award.

The 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony saw

Paris Saint-Germain

superstar

Lionel Messi

beat

Robert Lewandowski

to win his record-extending seventh award.

It comes a year after the award was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which deprived

Bayern Munich

’s prolific goalscorer of winning the award.

Lewandowski won the

Bundesliga

and Champions League in addition to scoring 47 goals in 44 games in all competitions for club and country in 2020.

During his acceptance speech when collecting the award,

Messi

acknowledged that Lewandowski deserved the award for his exploits in 2020.

"Last year, everyone was in agreement to say that [Lewandowski was] the big winner,"

Messi said.

"Hopefully [France Football] give you the Ballon d'Or 2020."

However, the 33-year-old striker remained unconvinced by those comments from Messi and admitted that he was gutted not to win the award.

"I felt sadness,"

he told Polish channel

Kanal Sportowy

.<em>

"I can't deny it. I can't say I was happy – on the contrary, I have a feeling of sadness.

"To be so close, to compete with Messi, of course I respect how he plays and what he has achieved. The mere fact that I was able to compete with him shows me the level that I was able to reach.

"I'm not that enthusiastic about getting the 2020 award. I would like [Messi's statement] to be a sincere and courteous statement from a great player and not just empty words."
