Neville thanked Solskjaer after the Norwegian dismissal

The former Red Devils striker, with poor results this season, was expected to be sacked after yesterday's defeat.

Former

Manchester United

star Gary Neville has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and thanked him for his efforts following the sacking of the Norwegian boss.

Following a 4-1 defeat to

Watford

, United issued a statement on Sunday announcing Solskjaer's departure from the club. This was Manchester United's fifth defeat in their last seven Premier League games and currently Michael Carrick is in charge of the Red Devils as interim manager. Solskjaer also sat on the United bench in 2018 as interim manager and has remained in this position until today. In 168 games that he was in charge, United has won 54.2% of the games. Now Neville praised him and thanked him for his efforts.

"Thank you Ole. You did us proud,"

Neville tweeted.

"The last two months were tough but before that you restored some soul into the club."

Solskjaer did well for United overall, gaining197 points during that time, with only Liverpool and Manchester City scoring more points than the Red Devils. However, gaining 17 points from 12 games this season eventually led to the dismissal of the Norwegian coach. United are currently seventh in the table and will face league leaders

Chelsea

in their next match.
