Chiellini: I knew Bunucci’s Milan move was a mistake

The Juventus captain says he was disappointed by his teammate's surprising decision to join the Rossoneri in 2017.

Leonardo Bonucci shocked Juventus fans by joining Milan in 2017, but he returned to the Allianz Stadium after only one season. The center-back was quick to reintegrate himself in Juventus’ backline, becoming a cornerstone of their defensive structure.

In a new interview with

DAZN

, Bonucci’s teammate Giorgio Chiellini was asked about the Italy international’s move to Milan.

“I was disappointed,”

Chiellini said.

“I wrote him a message in private. Life’s choices must be accepted, but I knew he was making a mistake.

“Milan at the time, with all due respect, was not Real Madrid, not the Milan of today. Going there today would be different. In that period, Leo took a step back in a difficult moment.”

He added:

“If we had gone on vacation together the month before, maybe he wouldn’t have left,” Chiellini said. “I would have made him understand he was making a mistake.”

Bonucci has made 452 appearances for Juventus during his two stints at the club. The 34-year-year old, who won the Euro 2020 trophy with Italy this summer, has featured in eight matches for the Bianconeri in their current campaign.
