Tottenham legend Jimmy Greaves dies aged 81

The Spurs’ all-time top scorer was also a member of the Three Lions’ World Cup-winning squad.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham striker Jimmy Greeves passed away at home in the early hours of Sunday morning. Tottenham confirmed the news in an official

statement

hours later.

"We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves, not just Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer but the finest marksman this country has ever seen.”

the statement reads.

"Jimmy passed away at home in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 19 September), aged 81."

Greeves is Spurs’ all-time top scorer, finding the net 266 times in his 379 appearances for the north London side. He also holds the club record for most goals in a single season, having scored 37 goals in the 1962-63 campaign.

Tottenham was not the only club that was blessed with Greeves’ hunger for goals. The London-born striker won two FA Cup titles and a European Cup winners trophy with Chelsea, before claiming the Scudetto with AC Milan in 1962.

Greeves was also a member of England’s World Cup-winning squad in 1966. The former Tottenham striker has scored 44 goals in his 57 caps for England, leaving his mark as one of the most clinical goalscorers in the country’s football history.
