Free-agent Boateng joined Lyon

The experienced German defender will start a new chapter of football.

Former

Bayern Munich

defender Jerome Boateng has joined

Lyon

as a free agent.

Boateng was left without a club after his contract with Bayern Munich expired on June 30, while the German club was reluctant to continue. Several clubs have tried to sign him in recent months, with rumors suggesting he could return to the Premier League, but Lyon eventually won the transfer and were able to sign the former Germany defender.

He told reporters:

"I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome. I can't wait to write a new chapter in my story. I can't wait to meet my team-mates. I know the team is young and I will try to bring my experience.

"I received other proposals but I quickly made up my mind. I thank the people who made sure that I came here. I have known the club for a long time, I have seen them play in the Champions League."

Lyon sporting director, Juninho said:

"Jerome Boateng will bring us his talent but also a lot more to the changing room. He was very motivated to come and play for us."

Boateng has played for Hertha Berlin, Manchester City and Bayern Munich and has played 362 games and won 22 trophies to date. He also played 72 games for Germany and won the 2014 World Cup.
