Pires hopes for Spain vs France in Euro 2020 quarter-finals

The Bleus legend is positive about France’s chances of winning the tournament but says they might struggle against Spain in the next round.

France

will face Switzerland in their Euro 2020 round-of-16 battle on Monday. The Bleus progressed to the knockout stage after finishing as Group F winners ahead of Germany and Portugal. Former France international

Robert Pires

believes Didier Deschamp’s side have enough quality to win the trophy but says they must embrace the tournament’s pressure.

"I think it is positive pressure,"

the Bleus legend told

Goal

.

"France are in the favourite position but there are many teams with good ability. We saw the Italian team.

"Many people are criticising Spain and I think that they have a good level and quality."

Spain

must beat Croatia to qualify for the quarter-finals. Pires hopes La Roja will face France in the next round of the tournament. The former Arsenal star was part of France’s Euro 2000 team that defeated Spain in the semifinals before winning the continental trophy.

"It would mean that both teams are doing well,"

Pires added.

"They are going to fight for the final and for the cup. I don't know what will happen but hopefully there will be [a France v Spain match].

"Spain has very good players for me and every time that we play with Spain we know that it is very complicated. In Euro 2000 it was very difficult because on the field there was very good quality, and hopefully we will meet with Spain".
