Chelsea’s Silva reveals why he is known as ‘The Monster’

The highly experienced Brazil international is still shining with Chelsea after signing a new contract.

Thiago Silva

admitted why everyone knows him as ‘The Monster’, with the Brazilian revealing that the nickname was given to him when he was playing for Fluminense.

The

Chelsea

centre-half has lived up to that name as he is still proving strong at the age of 36.

He has put pen to paper for a new contract with the Blues, having contributed to Champions League glory in 2021. Silva is eager to prove that he can keep being a colossus asset to Thomas Tuchel’s ploys.

Silva told the club's

official website

on how he was named 'O Monstro':

"Firstly, it was because of the good performances I’d put in, and due to the confidence that not only I, but all of the defence was giving to our goalkeeper.

"Actually, it was not the fans who came up with that nickname, it was the goalkeeper, Fernando Henrique [dos Anjos].

"He was the one who came up with that nickname after a move from the opposition in which I made a good recovery and was able to prevent them from scoring.

"Then, he looked at me and said ‘Nice one, Monster!’ Then the fans heard that through the microphones behind the goal and started calling me Monstro."

Silva made a name for himself by the time he was departing Fluminense to join AC Milan in 2009. Three years later, he made a move to Paris Saint-Germain, where he played for eight years. He delivered trophies in Italy, France and England, whereas he represented his country on 95 occasions. The 36-year-old is currently on Copa America duty with Brazil.

He added on his role for club and country:

"Forwards have less responsibility. They can do things using intuition. At the back, things are a bit more serious, in terms of positioning.

"I think that the 22-year-old Thiago was a guy who was willing to learn. Even though he had a good season with Fluminense, he still had a lot to learn.

"And the best thing is that I was prepared to learn, that’s what I consider the best thing. There’s no use in knowing that you need to learn if you lack the patience and the comprehension of things, because that doesn’t work."
