Muller urges Germany ‘to improve’ despite 4-2 victory over Portugal
Germany, who had a disappointing start to the competition having lost 1-0 to France in their Euro 2020 opening game, managed to defeat Portugal 4-2 yesterday with a superb performance against the defending champions.
Own goals from Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro canceled Cristiano Ronaldo’s 15th-minute opener as Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens gave
Die Mannschaft
a comfortable 4-2 victory over reigning Euro champions
while Liverpool’s Diego Jota scored the Portuguese men’s second goal.
Germany’s veteran,
Thomas Muller
, told reporters after the game: "We had a lot of good aspects, but also a lot of things that we still have to improve. That can cost points in the end.
"Now we have three points, now we're good at it tournament and we have it in our own hands. Now we mustn't overdo it or become arrogant - but we can believe in our quality. We can feel a little euphoria."
Currently
second
in Euro 2020 Group F standings
, the Germans are level on points with Portugal (3) and are chasing the World Cup champions, France, with one point.
Asked whether the victory over Portugal can be a message to Die Mannschaft’s rivals in the tournament,
Germany boss,
Joachim Low
, told reporters
: “It doesn’t have anything to do with initiating something.
“It gives you some satisfaction but we never had any doubts after losing to the world champions, we knew we could do better.
“At a tournament you know how it goes, step by step. The next step will be Hungary, which will be hard as they park the bus in defense.
“Overall it was a strong performance against a technically good Portuguese team who were strong on the counter-attack.
“Especially after going behind we showed a great team spirit, we didn’t lose control, we were dynamic and energetic, created a lot of opportunities.
“We managed to be a threat to the defense and overall this victory is well deserved.”
