France held to 1-1 draw against the ‘Group of Death’ underdogs

The World Cup winners were not able to win against Hungary in their second Group F match.

Having won their opening Euro 2020 game with a 1-0 result against Germany,

France

traveled to Budapest for their second group stage game against

Hungary

on Saturday. Didier Deschamps made a surprising change in his side’s lineup, where he started Lucas Digne ahead of Lucas Hernandez at the left-back position.

Hungary started the game with confidence and managed to create a few chances at the beginning of the game. However, Les Blues soon took over the possession and got their first chance in the 13th minute, where Karim Benzema’s shot from the edge of the box was stopped by

Peter Gulacsi

’s spectacular save.

France continued their attacks throughout the first half, but they were stunned by Hungary’s shocking opener in the 46th minute. Benjamin Pavard’s poor clearance gifted the ball to Roland Sallai, who managed to provide a brilliant assist for

Attila Fiola

in front of the goal. The 31-year-old slotted the ball past Hugo Lloris as Hungary took the lead just before half-time.

Les Bleues still seemed to be in shock at the beginning of the second half as they lacked composure in their efforts to equalize the game. Deschamps replaced Adrian Rabiot with Osmanne Dembele, who hit the right post moments after his substitution in the 59th minute.

Having bounced back from their lack of confidence at the beginning of the second half, France took control of the game and managed to get the equalizer five minutes past the hour mark.

Kylian Mbappe

ran behind Loic Negro and fired a pass into the box that was poorly cleared by Willi Orban.

Antoine Griezmann

found the loose ball at the perfect time and smashed it into the back of the net to make it 1-1. France continued to test Hungary’s backline throughout the final 30 minutes but they were denied by Gulaci’s heroics.

France are currently leading the Group F table with four points from their two matches. Deschamp's side will pay close attention to Portugal's crucial battle against Germany tonight as it might change their place on the table. Les Bleues will play their last group stage fixture against

Portugal

on Wednesday, while Hungary are set to face

Germany

at the Allianz Arena on the same day.
