Aymeric Laporte under criticism after changing his national team

Aymeric Laporte, a Manchester City center-back, switched his allegiance from France to Spain on Tuesday, intending to feature for Luis Enrique's side at Euro 2020. According to Marca, the decision has sparked outrage and disappointment in France.

Laporte, who has never represented the French national team's shirt, has appeared in 24 underage matches for them and was named three times in Didier Deschamps' squads but has never played. He was selected the last time in August of this year, but he was hospitalized and unable to attend the squad.

Many in France consider comments he made in March, in which he said that wearing the blue shirt has always been a fantasy of his and that playing for France as a child was one of the greatest experiences of his life, to be hypocritical.

The 26-year-old defender has previously expressed disappointment at not being selected by Deschamps, even going so far as to write him a letter. In December of 2018, the defender hinted that the French coach's lack of selection might be due to personal considerations rather than technical ones.

Former French national team players such as

Jerome Rothen

and

Emmanuel Petit

have slammed Laporte's resolution. They call him opportunistic, claiming that if you're French, you're French, and if you're Spanish, you're Spanish.
