Llorente dismisses luck playing a role in Atleti’s victory over Elche

Marcos Llorente believes Atletico Madrid did not win the clash against Elche based on luck, notwithstanding the hosts losing a late penalty.

Marcos Llorente

rejected the idea of luck playing a role in

Atletico Madrid

’s victory over

Elche

. The Spain international met the back of the net in the 23rd minute, after a goal from Luis Suarez was ruled out by VAR.

When the 26-year-old gave a penalty, he soon turned to zero from a hero. Atleti were not harmed, however.

The win has seen the league leaders two points clear on top of the

La Liga

table and should

Real Madrid

vanquish Osasuna, the gap will be closed. If Atletico win all their remaining games, they will grab the title.

"

It was an obligation to win, it was very important for everyone,"

Llorente told

Movistar

.

"The team knew how to carry out the game. All the rivals are at the top and Elche are a great team. We take all three points and it gives us great satisfaction."

When quizzed about luck having any part in Atleti’s victory, Llorente said:

"Starting from the fact that I don't believe in luck, in the end, if [the penalty] got to the goal, [Jan] Oblak had guessed the right way.

"We got the points and it gives us a lot of strength for what remains.

"Winning is always positive, confidence increases, and today is one of those days."

Simeone

told a news conference:

"It is time to work. The facts must be demonstrated on the pitch: that the team improves, plays with enthusiasm, is fierce and what I imagined and dreamed of when I arrived at Atletico."

When asked if his side are the favourites to win the title, Simeone said:

"We are not in the moment to think; we are in the moment to do."
