Ipswich fans threw flares to halt training as signage caught fire
Twelve flares were tossed over a fence by Ipswich Town fans as players were warming up for Tuesday's Sky Bet League One match against Northampton at Portman Road.
A gathering of Ipswich Town fans tossed flares into the club's training ground, stopping the squad's training momentarily.
Signpost on the fence burst into flames, and training was suspended - while the fire was put out by one of the coaching members - yet nobody was harmed in the occurrence, and the training session continued around 10 minutes after.
The Tractor Boys are twelfth in the
League Onestandings after Tuesday's thrashing to Peterborough. They completed eleventh in the last season after their relegation from
Championshipat the end of 2018/19, informed the occurrence to the police, and an investigation is in process.
A club spokesperson said:
"There was an incident at the training ground this morning where flares were thrown over a perimeter fence adjacent to the players.
"The flares caused signage on the fence to catch alight and in doing so put our staff at risk. The police were called and are investigating the matter. The supporters' group concerned have apologised for their actions."
