Sacking Lampard was a mistake - Owen

Owen criticized Chelsea's decision to sack Lampard.

English football legend Michael Owen believes that Lampard's success at

Chelsea

last season should have given him more time this season.

Lampard, the Blues' all-time leading goalscorer, was sacked on Monday after five defeats in his last eight games. The former derby manager, who signed a three-year contract with Chelsea in 2019, was able to lead Chelsea to the FA Cup final last season and finished in fourth place, despite the club being banned from participating in transfers.

The Blues spent a lot of money to strengthen their team this season, but the results did not live up to expectations, and now the they are 11 points behind leaders United and are in ninth place. Owen tweeted criticism of Chelsea's decision, claiming that more time should be given to Lampard.

He tweeted: “

Absolutely staggering decision from @ChelseaFC to sack Frank Lampard. Where do you begin?

“Against the odds made top 4 last season and qualified impressively to the knockout stages of the @ChampionsLeague this season. Bought some good players who will settle in given time. Madness.”
