Jets get their first three points of the season against Phoenix
Two spectacular goals secured Newcastle Jets’ first victory of the season on Sunday.
After a difficult start to the season and a terrible run of four back-to-back defeats,
Newcastle Jetsmanaged to achieve their first victory of the season against
Wellington Phoenixon Sunday. Valentino Yuel’s early goal put the Jets ahead in the 8th minute and Roy O’Donovan’s strike at the 51st minute secured the win for Craig Deans’ team. They conceded a late goal from the penalty spot but that was not enough for the Nix to escape the defeat. In a post-match interview,
Craig Deans
has spoken about his team’s performance.
"We've been working hard for 12 weeks now and we haven't had much reward for that work," he said.
"Tonight was probably our worst performance of the season in terms of the football we've played.
"But the most important thing was the three points."
The defeat was Phoenix’s first match in 15 days and now they are preparing themselves to face Central Coast on Sunday.
"We had a lot of the ball, we had a lot of opportunities to win that game,"
said the Nix boss Ufuk Talay.
"The biggest thing for me is believing in our process, believing in our principles and the way we want to play, having belief in my philosophy and what we need to do.
"We'll continue to do that and try to make it better every game that we play. I have no worries, we've been through this previously."
