Footballers with Most Goals in a Single Match

Goals are scored in football matches, no doubt, and in some of them even they rain! There have been matches in the history of football with more than 20 goals, however, in this post, we are not to these matches but to the footballers who scored these goals.

Let’s make it more clear; in this post, we’re specifically to footballers with most goals in a single match. What is the record for most goals scored in a single football match by a single player? Is it 5, 8, 10 or 12 or maybe even higher?

And which footballer holds the record for the

most goals in a single game of football

? These are the questions we’re going to answer in this post. You might not believe, but there has been a match, in the history of football, with more than 30 goals, though the footballer who scored the most number of goals in this match doesn’t actually top the list of footballers with most goals in a single match.

The Record for the Most Goals in a Single Game of Football

Well, that record, at least for now, belongs to two footballers each of whom have registered 14 goals in a single match, and the interesting fact here is that one of these footballers is a female one.

Hacene Lalmas (14 Goals)

The Algerian footballer who not only holds

the record for the most goals in a single game

of football but also the record for the most number of goals scored in the Algerian professional league (131). He’s also Algerian Cup finals all-time top scorer with 6 goals scored in 3 finals and the 14th best African player of all time as voted by Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With 14 goals scored in a single match of football, Hacene Lalmas actually tops the list of footballers with most goals in a single match with a female footballer from Pakistan we’re going to introduce next. In an Algerian professional league match between the clubs, OM Ruisseau and JS Birtouta, in 1962-63 season which actually ended in OM Ruisseau’s 18-0 victory, Lalmas, from the winning side, managed to score 14 goals which is actually the record for most goals scored in a match by a player in the history of football.

Malika-e-Noor (14 Goals)

And here comes the female footballer who shares the record for

most goals scored in a match by a player

with Hacene Lalmas: The 27-year-old Malika-e-Noor who currently plays as a defender for the Pakistani Army football team and is the vice-captain and a midfielder of the Pakistani women’s national team.

She actually managed to score 14 goals for his side, Young Rising Star, in their 25-0 victory over another Pakistani team, namely Margala, in a Pakistani women's football championship match held in September 2011, and by doing so, she actually became the only female footballer in the world to have scored 14 goals in a single match and the sole holder of the record for most goals scored in a match by a player in women’s football.

It should also be mentioned here that, despite playing as a defender or midfielder, Malika-e-Noor is a prolific goalscorer, too, and has scored 83 goals in her 180 appearances at league level which translates to almost one goal (exactly 0.92) in every two appearances.

Archie Thompson (13 Goals)

If we were to sort the list of footballers with most goals in a single match based on the goals they have scored in one single international match, or in other words, most goals scored in a single football match at international level, then, Archie Thompson would top the list since there are no footballers, except for him, to have scored that number of goals at international level.

Archie Thompson is a 42-year-old retired Australian footballer who played for 10 Australian clubs during his career and also the Australian national team between 2001 and 2013 where he actually made 54 appearances and scored 28 goals for them.

One of these appearances was, in fact, of special importance, at least to Thompson himself: The match against American Samoa in 2001 that ended in Australia’s outstanding 31-0 victory where Thompson managed to score 13 goals and break the previous record for most goals scored in a single football match at international level held jointly by his fellowman, Gary Cole, who scored seven goals in New Zealand’s 13-0 victory over Fiji in 1982 World Cup qualifying round, and Karim Bagheri of Iran, who scored the same number of goals against Maldives in the World Cup qualifying round in 1988.

Of course, there were better records than what is mentioned above - 7 goals in a single international match we mean: The 10 goals Sophus Nielsen of Denmark scored in in his country’s Olympic team 17-1 victory over France and the same number of goals that Gottfried Fuchs of Germany scored in his country’s Olympic team 16-0 victory over Russia, however, since these records were ruled out because they were at Olympic and not professional football level.

Cosmina Dusa (13 Goals)

Another female footballer on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match, Cosmina Dusa is a 31-year-old Romanian forward who has been serving the Turkish women’s club, Konak Belediyespor, since 2012. Just like Malika-e-Noor, she has also proved a prolific goalscorer throughout his career which actually started in 2007 and with the Romanian club, CFF Clujana Cluj. The proof to this is the 155 goals Dusa has scored in her 136 appearances for Konak Belediyespor which means she has scored a little bit more than one goal (exactly 1.1) in every appearance she has made for the Turkish club.

However, we are not to the number of Dusa’s club goals here but to her record number of goals scored in a single match: 13 goals in a match against CFF Clujana within the Romanian women’s Liga 1 in October 2010 which actually puts her among the top record goal scorers in a single match. The match ended in Dusa’s side 13-2 victory, and as you can see from the result, all the match goals on the winning side were scored by Dusa and no other teammate of her. This is a rare occasion among the footballers with most goals in a single match who have scored 10 or more than 10 goals in a single match. In fact, there is only one footballer - actually a passed footballer - from Hungary, namely Gyula Zsengeller, who repeated this occasion once.

John Petrie (13 Goals)

The last footballer on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match with 13 goals, John Petrie is actually a passed Scottish footballer who belongs to a far old generation of football; this you will admit if you know that he was born in 1867 and died in 1932, actually before the start of World War II. Petrie only served two Scottish clubs, namely Strathmore and

Arbroath

, but we don’t know from when to when and how many appearances he made for them. Anyhow, what Petrie is famous for is actually the 13 goals he scored, only at the age of 18, in a match against another Scottish side, namely Bon Accord, in September 1885 which ended in his side’s 36-0 victory. His record was not broken up until 1962 that Hacene Lalmas of Algeria scored 14 goals in a single match.

Gyula Zsengeller (12 Goals)

Another footballer on the list of

footballers with most goals in a single match

who, as mentioned earlier above, is one of the only two footballers on the list who scored all the goals for his side in a more-than-10-goals victory, Gyula Zsengeller is a passed Hungarian footballer known for his prolific goalscoring talent at his own time. With 387 goals that he scored for Hungarian clubs between 1935 and 1947 in 325 appearances that he made for them, he’s the Hungarian league third highest goalscorer of all time. He was also part of the

Hungarian national team

who advanced to 1938 World Cup final where Zsengeller became the second top scorer of the competition with 5 goals behind Leonidas of Brazil with 7 goals.

Anyway, what actually has brought Zsengeller on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match is the 12 goals he scored for the Colombian side, Deportivo Samarios, in a league match against Universidad in July 1951 which ended in his side’s 12-1 victory. It should also be mentioned here that Zsengeller also served the top Italian club, AS Roma, for some time - actually two seasons - during his career.

Ali Ashfaq (12 Goals)

Another footballer on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match with 12 goals scored in a single match, Ali Ashfaq is a 35-year-old Maldivian forward who is still in the business. He has served 12 clubs most of which Maldivian since 2001 and is currently serving another Maldivian club, Club Eagles. Just like some of the other footballers mentioned earlier in this post, Ashfaq is also a prolific goalscorer: He has scored a total of 281 goals in his 248 club appearances which means he has scored a little bit more than one goal (exactly 1.1) in every appearance he has made.

What is Ashfaq is famous for, however, is the 12 goals he scored for his side, VB Sports Club, in a single match within Maldive’s Third Division against another Maldivian club, Kalhaidhoo, in July 2009, which actually ended in his side’s 20-0 victory. Ashfaq is actually the first Maldivian footballer to have played for a non-Maldivian club - actually the Malaysian club,

PDRM FA

- and also won a title with them. He has also received offers from European clubs like FC Porto and Benfica, but never joined them as he chose to.

Debbie McWhinnie (12 Goals)

Yet another female footballer on the list of

footballers with most goals in a single match

, Debbie McWhinnie is a 40-year-old retired footballer whose goalscoring record with the Galsgow City women’s club is somewhat interesting: She scored 72 goals in 36 appearances for them which translates to two goals in every appearance.

And in one of these appearances, actually in February 2004, in a match against the third division club, Motherwell, within Scottish Women’s Cup, McWhinnie contributed to her side’s 28-0 win with the 12 goals she scored for them; the goals that actually had the then manager of Galsgow City women’s team, Peter Caulfield, call McWhinnie the best women’s striker in Scotland. It might be also interesting for you to know that McWhinnie also scored 10 goals for her side, Hibernian, in a match against East Kilbride within Scottish Women’s Premier League which actually ended in her side’s 17-0 victory.

Jeno Karoly (11 Goals)

A passed Hungarian footballer from an old old generation of football, Jeno Karoly only played for two Hungarian clubs namely, MTK Budapest and Budapesti AK, during his 16-year career which actually ended in 1919. Karoly became the Hungarian league top scorer in 1903 and 1905 and won the league title in 1903 and 1908 plus a Hungarian Cup when he was with MTK Budapest, however, what brings him on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match is the 11 goals he scored for

MTK Budapest

in October 1905 in a match against MAFC Budapest which ended in his side’s 15-1 victory.

Pedro Carrion (11 Goals)

And here comes a Spanish footballer on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match: Pedro Jose Carrión Padial, simply known as Pedro Carrion, a 43-year-old retired footballer who played for some lower-tier Spanish clubs during his career which actually lasted from 2002 to 2019. What is quite remarkable about Carrion’s career is that he never joined a club for a transfer fee but always on free transfer, and of course, the 11 goals he scored for the first-tier Gibraltarian club,

Europa FC

, in May 2016 in a match against Britannia XI which ended in his side’s 16-1 victory.

Ernest Wilimowski (10 Goals)

The passed Polish-German footballer belonging to an old generation of football, Ernest Wilimowski served the Polish club,

Ruch Chorzow

, and a handful of lower-tier German clubs during his career which lasted from 1934 to 1955.

Just like some of the other footballers already mentioned in this post, Wilimowski was also a prolific goalscorer but with two records to his name, too: He’s the first ever player in the history of football to score four goals in a single World Cup match - actually the match against Brazil in the 1938 World Cup round of 16 which ended in Poland’s 6-5 loss - and the most prolific goalscorer in a season with 107 goals in 45 appearances according to Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF).

What actually has brought Wilimowski on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match is the 10 goals he scored for the Polish side, Ruch Chorzow, in May 1939 in a match against another Polish side, namely Union Touring Łódź, which actually ended in his side’s 12-1 victory.

Anatoly Novozhilov (10 Goals)

Believe it or not, there is no information at hand about this footballer; actually no information except for that he was an Estonian footballer and he managed to score 10 goals for his side, Tevalte Talinn, in September 1993 in a match which ended in their 24-0 victory over Kalev Sillamäe which was by high probability within the Estonian league. And since Novozhilov is so anonymous a footballer, there is not even a photo of him to show you.

Devon Hodges (10 Goals)

Although from Jamaica, fortunately, Devon Hodges is not like Anatoly Novozhilov considering the available information on him. He has played for six Jamaican and two Vietnamese clubs since 2003 and has proved somehow a prolific goalscorer during his career, though within lower-tier leagues of the countries mentioned above. He has scored a total of 146 goals in 302 club appearances which is nearly one goal in every two appearances.

Hodges served the Jamaican club, Rivoli United, more than any other club during his career - actually for around 7 years - and became Jamaica’s National Premier League top scorer in two consecutive seasons; actually the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. However, what is Hodges is quite known for is the 10 goals he scored for the same Jamaican side in a match against Invaders United - another Jamaican side - in May 2005 which ended in his side’s 15-0 victory. It should also be mentioned here that Hodges made 6 appearances for the

Jamaican national team

between 2009 and 2012 and scored 2 goals for them during this period - this time one goal in every three appearances.

Dada Maravilha (10 Goals)

The only Brazilian footballer on the list of

footballers with most goals in a single match

with actually 10 goals in a single match, Dario José dos Santos, simply known as Dario or Dada Maravilha (meaning wonder Dada in Brazilian), is a 75-year-old retired footballer who served 17 Brazilian clubs during his career which lasted from 1967 to 1986 - each of these clubs for a year or two.

Dario was also a prolific goalscorer during his career and scored a total of 113 goals in his 240 club appearances - at league level - which translates to almost one goal (exactly 0.94) in every two appearances that he made. From all these goals, the 10 goals he scored for his side,

Sport Recife

, in a match against Santo Amaro in April 1976 which ended in their 14-0 victory are the ones to remember since this is also a record for the retired Brazilian footballer within the Brazilian football concerning the official matches indeed - the previous record belonged to Pele with 8 goals for Sanots in a single match in April 1964. It should also be mentioned here that Dario made 7 appearances for the Brazilian national team between 1970 and 1973 and was part of the same team who won 1970 World Cup.

Joe Payne (10 Goals)

The last footballer on the list of footballers with most goals in a single match with actually 10 goals in a single match, Joe Payne is a passed English footballer who served the two top English clubs, Chelsea and West Ham United, for some time during his career - the former actually for 7 years between 1938 and 1945 which is longer than the time he served any other club during his career. Payne scored a total of 110 goals in his 118 club appearances - almost one goal in every appearance - with his 10 goals for Lutton Town in a match against Bristol Rovers in April 1936 that ended in his side’s 12-0 victory being the ones always to remember. And this is actually a record for Joe Payne not yet broken within the English Football League (EFL).
