Liverpool FC 2021 Summer Transfer News: Live Updates

In the 2020-21 season, Liverpool suffered a lot from several injuries and their bench didn't have enough depth to cover it. In Liverpool FC 20-21 transfers, let's see how the Reds reinforce their squad.

As the defending champion of the Premier League in 2020-21,

Liverpool

didn't fulfill the fans' expectations. The season had its particular situation, including the empty stadiums and for Liverpool, long term injuries. The injuries went catastrophic when the three main defenders—

Virgil van Dijk

, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip were unavailable for

Jurgen Klopp

for most of the season. Diogo Jota and Jordan Henderson were the other notable long-term injuries in the past season. Of course, if you have Thiago Alcantara in your team, you should have a backup plan for the days he's out due to injury.

In the same season,

Manchester City

, with the squad armed to the teeth, won the title without any trouble. This, more than anything indicates that if Liverpool wants to run for the title, an active transfer window is inevitable for them. Georginio Wijnaldum confirmed his departure before the transfer window opened. This leaves Klopp even fewer options for the midfield. Given the potential absence of the remaining midfielders, hiring midfielders is the most essential transfer objective, next to hiring a reliable defender.

Ibrahima Konaté

Liverpool signed Ibrahima Konate from

RB Leipzig

to be the first one of

Liverpool FC 20-21 transfers

.The 22 centre back was the top priority in Liverpool's transfer list. After the catastrophic injuries of Liverpool's defenders last season, Jurgen Klopp is trying to cover the weakness in his squad.

Konaté has played in all the France national teams except for the senior team. In 2017, shortly after the debut for

Sochaux

, his transfer came up. Konaté was hired by RB Leipzig and despite his young age, he made his debut in Bundesliga soon. In the second season, he became a crucial player for Leipzig.

Konaté is 194 cm tall and has high physical strength. His style of play is comparable with Virgil van Dijk. Jurgen Klopp had an eye on the French defender last season and it is not the first time Liverpool approached Konate. The fee is reported to be €40 million and he will be introduced officially on July first.

Adam Lewis

The twenty one year old left back, Adam Lewis has agreed on a season long loan move to the Scottish Premiership club,

Livingston

. David Martindale’s side finished sixth in the last season. Adam Lewis has spent the first half of the 2020-21 season on loan for the ligue 2 side, Amiens SC, but it was cut short in January. For the second half of the season, he was on a loan to Plymouth Argyle in League one and has participated in 20 appearances.

“It’s fantastic to be trusted with players of this calibre from one of the biggest football clubs in the world and hopefully this leads to further Liverpool FC prospects making their way up to Livingston FC,” Martindale said in an interview.

“It’s a win-win for both parties as we get a player whom financially would not be on our radar and the player gets some much-needed game time to progress and enhance their development in a very competitive league.”

Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum

is probably the biggest departure of

Liverpool transfer news

. It was clear before the last season ending that he will go on a different path from The Reds.

Barcelona

was one of the clubs that pursue Wijnaldum and was interested in the free transfer.

Barcelona’s Dutch coach

Ronald Koeman

was one of the reasons the rumors remained until it turned out Wijnaldum is not going to Spain. When a player approaches the final of his contract, it is common to have many offers. The offer Wijnaldum accepted was from

Paris Saint-Germain

and Barcelona to speed the transfer of another Netherlands national team player,

Memphis Depay

.

In five seasons with Liverpool, Wijnaldum caped in 237 games, netted 22 goals, and delivered 16 assists. In Liverpool's competitive midfield selection, he was the first choice for Jurgen Klopp. The 30 years old wore the team's Captain armband on several occasions of his last season in English football.

Sepp van den Berg

The Liverpool youngster has extended his loan deal to

Preston

. The 19 year old defender first signed a loan deal with Preston in the January 2021 transfer window and made 16 appearances, mostly as a right wing back or right back.

Speaking after completing the deal, Sepp said: "I’m very pleased. I said it last season at the end that I would love to come back and I was really happy it worked out. I’m just looking forward to playing a whole season now and playing from the start.”

Sepp van den Berg

joined the Reds in the summer of 2019 from

PEC Zwolle

and has featured four times for Jürgen Klopp’s first team to date. Frankie McAvoy, Preston head coach, stated in an interview that: “He came as a right centre back. He didn’t get many games playing in that position, but he fitted in really well as a right back and then as a right wing back. I thought he was fantastic. I think he’s done really well and we’ll see how he does at right centre back.”

Harry Wilson

Benfica

is interested in signing

Harry Wilson

from Liverpool. Wales national team player in Euro 2020 is getting close to a permanent move. Wilson joined Liverpool U9 in 2005 and since then he had only two appearances for the senior team. The Welsh winger’s contract with Liverpool expires in June 2023.

He has been loaned 5 seasons in five different teams. It is very unlikely for him to become a first team player in Liverpool so either he will go on another loan or he will sign a new club permanently. Benfica has sent an official bid for him to Liverpool but has been rejected. The Portuguese club will keep on negotiating with The Reds. The only full time cap by Wilson for Liverpool was in EFL Cup against Arsenal. The market value of Wilson peaked following his spell at

Bournemouth

in the Premier League. Wilson is Liverpool’s youngest international player ever.

Kamil Grabara

Kamil Grabara

will wear the number 1 of Copenhagen for the upcoming season. The Polish goalkeeper leaves Liverpool without making any appearances in the senior team. Grabara has played for Liverpool's youth squads. It is not Grabara's first time in Danish Superliga. He was a player of Aarhus GF in two spells. The first spell began from January 2019 until the end of that season. After returning from the loan in AGF, Liverpool sent him on a new loan to

Huddersfield

.

In the Championship, he immediately became a crucial player and made 28 caps for Huddersfield. Aarhus GF took Grabra on a full season loan. His performance helped AGF finish the league in 4th place. The 22 years old goalkeeper will leave Liverpool once again, but this time on a permanent deal. Copenhagen is the most successful Danish club and has the potential to win the Superliga title. The transfer fee is reported to be €3.5 million, with five years length.

Ozan Kabak

Liverpool is not keeping Turkish defender

Ozan Kabak.

In the 2020-21 mid-season transfer window, Liverpool was forced to hire a defender due to the injuries their main defenders had. Ozan Kabak came from

Schalke

on loan with an option to buy. The Reds refused to activate the €21 million buy-out clause and Schalke lowered the price to €10 million. The second offer was turned down by Liverpool because after signing Ibrahima Konate, signing a defender was not a priority for Jurgen Klopp.

The 21 years old defender appeared in 9 Premier League matches and 4 Champions League games. He became the first Turkish player to play for an English club in the Champions League. Kabak is likely to remain in the Premier League due to Schalke’s relegation last season. Leicester and

Norwich

are two possible destinations to keep Kabak far from 2. Bundesliga.

Divock Origi

Southampton is linked with Liverpool striker

Divock Origi

. The Belgian is low in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order and Salah, Mane, Firmino, and Jota are hard to compete with. In order to play more often, Origi has to leave Liverpool and some Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation.

Southampton

has joined Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and West Ham on following Origi's situation for a move.

The 26 years old joined Liverpool in 2014 and since then has featured in 161 matches and scored 36 goals. The peak of his career was, of course, in the 2019 Champions League. Origi scored an early goal against Barcelona in the semi final second leg and his late goal completed Liverpool’s memorable comeback. Later in the final against Tottenham, he doubled the lead in 87’ and secured the title for the Reds.

Saul Niguez

Saul Niguez

is getting closer to leaving

Atletico Madrid

and Liverpool has made some inquiries about him. Along with Liverpool, Manchester United and

Chelsea

also want to sign Saul. The Spanish midfielder has been a key player for Diego Simeone since the 2014-15 season. He won La Liga with Atletico last season but it seems his days at Madrid are over and Premier League is likely to be his next challenge.

Liverpool consider him as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left for Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of the 2021 summer transfer window. The arrival of Rodrigo de Paul was the green light for Saul’s departure. There are five years remaining on his contract with Atletico, but the club’s consent will help Saul find his new team easier.

Jordan Henderson

The future of Liverpool's captain is complicated and he may leave Anfield. The contract of long serving captain

Jordan Henderson

expires at the end of 2023. There are some others including high priority players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Fabinho, and Alisson Becker, who have the same expiry date. Clearly, Henderson is the first player that Liverpool's board is concerned about leaving the club.

The talks for a contract extension are ongoing, but there seemed to be no progression. Liverpool does not want to lose another valuable midfielder for free like Wijnaldum. Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are two clubs following Henderson and if Liverpool and their captain do not reach an agreement they will try for him. Henderson is likely to surpass 300 Premier League games for Liverpool but the upcoming season may be the last one for the 31 years old at Anfield.

Marko Grujic

Marko Grujic

is targeted by Serie A team Sassuolo to replace Manuel Locatelli. Grujic joined Liverpool in 2016 and since then he has only made a few appearances for the Reds. The 25 years old midfielder spent the last season on loan at

Porto

. He had a good season in Portugal and made 23 caps for Porto and scored 2 goals.

Manuel Locatelli is about to leave Sassuolo for Juventus and Sassuolo is willing to replace him with Grujic. The Serbian midfielder is valued at €15 million by Liverpool. Sassuolo is currently unable to pay the fee, but after the sale of Locatelli, they will collect enough money to sign Grujic.

Taiwo Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi

left Liverpool for

Union Berlin

on a permanent deal. The 24 years old striker didn’t make his debut for Liverpool and since 2015, when he joined the club, he has left Liverpool on seven different loans. In the 2020-21 Bundesliga he played for Union Berlin and at the end of the season his loan expired and he came back to Liverpool.

The Nigerian was at Liverpool’s pre-season training camp under Jurgen Klopp when the deal was made. The fee is reported to be €8.5 million and Liverpool will receive 10 percent of his future transfer fee in case he leaves Berlin. Awoniyi featured in 22 matches for Union and scored 5 goals. Awoniyi played for two other German clubs FSV Frankfurt and Mainz 05 on loan before joining Union.

Harry Wilson Update

Harry Wilson joined Championship club

Fulham

on a permanent deal. Wilson spent the 2020-21 season at another Championship club

Cardiff City

. The Welsh striker had a good season in Cardiff and managed to score his first professional hat trick against Birmingham City. Wilson had the experience of playing for other Championship clubs before. He went on loan to Hull City and Derby County in two back to back seasons between 2017 to 2019.

The 24 years old striker made his Premier League debut while he was on loan at Bournemouth and scored 7 goals for the club in the English top tier. He scored a wonderful free kick for Derby in the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Wilson was a part of Wales in Euro 2020 and appeared in two matches facing Italy and Turkey. The transfer fee is reported to be  €14 million.

Ben Davies

Ben Davies

left Liverpool on loan to Sheffield United. The 26 years old defender joined Liverpool in February 2021 from

Preston North End

. Davies did not make an appearance for Liverpool due to his struggle with injury. Davies was supposed to back up for Liverpool’s lack of defenders in the past season and he failed to use the chance. With the arrival of Konate and the return of van Dijk and Gomez, Davies was unlikely to play for the Reds.

The recently relegated Sheffield were looking for an experienced defender and Davies, with 136 Championship appearances for Preston, meets their requirements. Bournemouth and Celtic were other clubs interested in signing Davies on loan. His loan contract with the Blades expires on 31 May 2022 and he will return to Liverpool because his contract with the Reds stands until June 2025.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri

joined Lyon in order to play on a regular basis. The 29 years old avoided risking another season at Liverpool because he probably will not make it to the first squad. The Swiss international winger had a good summer and scored 3 precious goals in Euro 2020 for Switzerland, including a beautiful long range goal he netted against Turkey.

In 2018 Shaqiri joined Liverpool on a €14 million move from

Stoke City

as a back up for Mohamed Salah. He made 63 appearances for Liverpool and scored 8 goals and delivered 9 assists. He signed a three year long contract with Lyon and the transfer fee is  €6 million. The French side had a busy summer reinforcing the squad for the new manager, Peter Bozs. Emerson Palmieri from Chelsea and Jerome Boateng are Lyon’s other notable arrivals. Shaqiri’s move would be beneficial for Liverpool prospect Harvey Elliott to improve under Klopp.

Rhys Williams

Rhys Williams

went on a season-long loan to

Swansea City

. The 20 year old defender made his debut last season and due to Liverpool’s injury hit he increased the number to 19. The return of van Djik, Matip, and Gomez, followed by Konate’s made it hard for Williams to return to the starting eleven. Despite approving William’s departure, Liverpool has extended his contract until 2026 and he will have the chance to return to Anfield.

After a promising performance last season, it was time to gain by playing regularly. Unlike Liverpool, Swansea manager Russell Martin prefers a 3 defenders formation and it may take some time for Williams to adapt to new tactics. The young English defender went through Liverpool’s academy to the senior squad. Williams has left Liverpool once before when he went on loan to Kidderminster Harriers in National League North.
