He made his debut for Mönchengladbach in a match against Munich 1860, in which his team won 4–2. However, de jong was largely unnoticed in his first match, scoring or assisting on no goals.

On the 21st of August, he made his European debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach, scoring an own goal from a free kick in a 3–1 loss to Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions league qualifiers. De jong's first-team chances faded later in the season following a squabble with manager Lucien Favre, and he only made twenty-three starts, scoring six times. De jong claimed at the end of the season that he was optimistic in his abilities to prove himself as the best striker in the league.

However, de jong's first-team position remained limited in the 2013–14 season, as his playing minutes declined dramatically and he only made fourteen appearances in the first half of the season.

De jong signed a loan deal with Premier League team Newcastle United until the end of the 2013–14 season on January 29, 2014. On February 1, he made his Tyne-Wear derby debut against Sunderland. De jong announced his return to Borussia Mönchengladbach in May 2014, despite failing to score in any of his twelve appearances for Newcastle.

De jong signed a five-year extension with PSV Eindhoven for €5.5 million on July 12, 2014. De Jong said after his transfer to PSV that he thought he had made a mistake by moving to Germany.
