"It was just a football match" - Emiliano Martinez defends his World Cup final celebrations

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez explained his controversial celebrations at the 2022 World Cup after being named the FIFA Best men’s goalkeeper of the year.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina received the FIFA Best men’s goalkeeper of the year at Monday’s ceremony in Paris.

He was one of Argentina's heroes in Qatar, saving a penalty from Kingsley Coman in the final to help his nation to win World Cup title after 36 years.

Martinez

caused controversy a few times during the tournament with his celebrations. He also mocked France star

Kylian Mbappe

twice after winning the World Cup in the dressing room and back in Buenos Aires.

In an interview with TMC after the ceremony, Martinez explained his antics in Qatar, but refused to apologise for his behaviour.

He said:

“Seriously, it was just a football match. Honestly, I love France. I've come here plenty of times on vacation. I love the French. I shared a room with two French players from Aston Villa. And as I said before, Arsenal had lots of great players. Arsene Wenger is a legend and he now works for FIFA. It was good to see him again.”

Martinez also praised

France

for reaching the World Cup final in two consecutive tournaments.

He said:

“Frankly, they did the impossible to try to win the World Cup, they won the Nations League last time (in 2021). They have reached the final and a great future awaits them.”
