Matthaus warns Nagelsmann: "Muller belongs behind the striker"

After playing Muller as a forward in Bayern's 4-4 draw with Salzburg on Friday, the Bayern icon warns Nagelsmann against using the Germany international in the forward post.

Mostly operated in the midfield as a support act to Robert Lewandowski, the injuries are affecting Julian Nagelsmann's option as he used

Thomas Muller

in a forward role in a friendly draw with RB Salzburg.

Bayern

will return to competitive action next week against RB Leipzig, with Lothar Matthaus warning the Bavarians boss against using the German as the striker. Matthaus told the German magazine

Kicker

:

"You're not doing Thomas any favors, he's in the wrong place up front.

"Let him play where he has his strengths. Thomas belongs behind the striker, like in the past with Robert Lewandowski."

Muller is 29 caps behind Matthaus' record, and the Germany legend believes the 33-year-old will only stay involved in

Hansi Flick

's side if he plays a significant role.

He added: "

I don't want to see him in the role of Lukas Podolski: to be there and play as a joker for the statistics in the 90th minute."
