Courtois: "Ronaldo's transfer proves credibility of Arabian football"

After struggling at Portugal and Manchester United, the Portuguese star moved to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in a lucrative deal. Despite criticisms, Thibaut Courtois claims the move is proof of Saudi Arabia's football ambitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo

 has moved to

Al Nassr

on a two-and-a-half-year deal which would see him earn something close to €200m a year. Many have questioned his decision to move to the Middle East and have deemed it sad that a player like Ronaldo has chosen to go to a less-prestigious league.

On the contrary, Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate believes the transfer is proof of Saudi Arabia’s ambitions.

Thibaut Courtois

said:

"The transfer of Cristiano makes it clear that the country wants to improve in sports.

"Cristiano choosing to come here is his decision, but it shows that Arabia wants to improve. They've brought him in to win the league."

Real Madrid’s boss

Carlo Ancelotti

added: "Cristiano has been a fantastic signing. We wish him well. He's a legend of our club, like [Gareth] Bale, who retired yesterday. They remain in the hearts of all Madridistas."

Currently in Saudi Arabia for the Supercopa de Espana, the

Los Blancos

will face Valencia on Wednesday. Ancelotti added:

"Titles are always important for this club. Last year gave us a lot of confidence for that season. Hopefully the same thing will happen this year.

"We have to fight for all the titles. We have one very close to try to win it. The goal is the Super Cup, for now."
