Lothar Matthaus delivers damning Ronaldo verdict

Matthaus calls Ronaldo “opposite of Messi” as he criticizes Portugal star for his World Cup performance.

Germany legend and 1990 Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus has called Ronaldo "a big failure of the World Cup", believing that Ronaldo has “damaged his legacy”.

Having had a turbulent build up to the World Cup, with

Ronaldo

giving an interview that all but ensured his departure from Manchester United, the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner didn’t have a particularly well World Cup campaign as he only scored once and was benched in Portugal’s knockout-stage matches.

This has resulted in Lothar Matthaus delivering a damning statement about the Portuguese star to the Bild publication, saying:

"With his ego trips, Ronaldo has damaged the team and himself.

"There is no doubt that he was a great player and an absolutely lethal finisher. But now he has damaged his legacy.

"I find it hard to think that he can find a place in a team. I kind of feel sorry for Ronaldo.”

Matthaus’ assessment comes at the heel of

Lionel Messi

garnering the ultimate glory by crowning his career with a World Cup title, which leads Matthaus to call him the “player of the millennium”.

"Ronaldo is of course a big failure of the World Cup, the opposite of Messi,"

Matthaus said.

"[Messi is] the absolute winner. He deserves it because he has given me and all football fans great joy with his qualities and the way he plays over 17-18 years.

"For me, Messi is the player of the millennium."
