Genoa drops Portanova after rape trial

The first trial for the case against the midfielder found the Geona player, his uncle, and some of his friends guilty of allegedly "gang raping" a woman as Genoa officially drops the player for tomorrow's Serie B match against Ascoli.

Weeks after a campaign that Serie B players took part in urging an end to violence against women, Genoa midfielder

Manolo Portanova

was found guilty of participating in a "gang rape" of a student that he was first accused of in May 2021.

Genoa

rapidly dropped the player from their Sunday Serie B fixture with Ascoli as interim coach Alberto Gilardino declared:

“Portanova will not be called up, so now I only want to talk about the game.”

While the Italian FA has opened its own investigation into Portanova, he might face an initial six-year prison.
