Guardiola on Liverpool tie: "Jurgen at left-back and I in midfield"

Liverpool and Man City are drawn for the next round of the Carabao Cup with the game set to be played at a stage where squads are likely to be stretched due to the World Cup. The Premier League rivals will face each other for the third time on 20 December, two days after the World Cup's final.

Ahead of

Manchester City

's Saturday clash against Brentford, their head coach

Pep Guardiola

responded to Carabao Cup draw against Liverpool, which will be the third time two sides meet this face after a Premier League clash and Community Shield final.

"He's going to play at left-back," he quipped on

Jurgen Klopp

in a press conference.

"I'm going to play holding midfielder. [But] I don't know how many players we will have.

"If [their national teams] don't get through the group stages, then they will be able to play Liverpool. If not, then we will see. Players will come back, but I don't know in what condition [yet]."

Giving an injury update on their prolific striker

Erling Haaland

, Guardiola added:

"I'd prefer him to go to the World Cup

.

"[But] unfortunately they didn't qualify. He'll recover hopefully perfectly from his injury. He'll be in Marbella or Norway, and will hopefully come back to train."

Despite

Kyle Walker

's injury, the right-back was included in Gareth Southgate's squad for the upcoming Qatar World Cup alongside also injured club-mate Kalvin Phillips

"

It's a decision from Gareth,"

he added.

"One-hundred per cent, we support his decision. After Saturday, the players belong to their national team, not us. I'm not worried

."
