UEFA investigates Celtic banners, clears Rangers
Celtic could be fined by UEFA for showing Queen Elizabeth II banners during their match against Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Union of European Football Associations (
UEFA
) has begun the disciplinary process against
Celticfor banners displayed during their Champions League match against
Shakhtar Donetsk.
At the Polish Army Stadium in Warsaw, where the two teams battled out a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, the Celtic end featured several banners that reference the tragic passing of
Queen Elizabeth II
.
As a result of UEFA's confirmation to Stats Perform on Thursday that disciplinary proceedings are currently being conducted, Celtic are now at risk of receiving punishments.
However, Celtic's opponents, Rangers, will not be penalized for disobeying UEFA's directives for playing the national hymn as a tribute to the Queen before their match against Napoli, in which a score of 3-0 defeated them.
The governing body of football in Europe issued the following statement regarding the incident: The incident is not the subject of any UEFA disciplinary proceedings."
