Antonello urges Milanese clubs to build a new stadium amid competition

With both Milanese clubs back in European competition as well as going toe-to-toe in the Serie A race, the Nerazzurri director warns that two rivals won't be able to compete at the international level as long as they share the same stadium.

Inter

and Milan are both back in the

Champions League

this season after Milan won the

Serie A

title last season in a close race with their local rivals.

Milan

had to settle on a draw against

RB Salzburg

before winning their second group game against

Dinamo Zagreb

. The Nerazzurri was defeated at San Siro in their opening game against Bayern before a 2-0 victory over Victoria Plzen.

While earlier Milan chief

Paolo Maldini

admitted it's mathematically impossible for the local rivals to go through the next Champions League stage considering their smaller budgets than some of their rivals in the competition, Inter director

Alessandro Antonello

, agreeing with Maldini, claims the first necessity for such an aim is to build a new stadium.

Antonello said at the

MilanoParigiCapitali

event:

“The fundamental issue is that, without the right infrastructure, clubs like Inter and Milan, but in general the entire Italian football system, won’t be able to compete at the top level internationally.

“A stadium brings additional revenue, which can be reinvested to strengthen the squad and challenge at the highest level in Europe.”

The Inter director went on to detail how much

Italy

would benefit from a new stadium in Milan as he urges building infrastructure considering the country races to host

Euro 2032.

 He added:

“It’s difficult to compare with France because they reaped the benefits of a sporting event with the 2016 European Championships.

“Italy has put itself forward as a candidate for EURO 2032, but that’s a bit far away and meanwhile we are trying to get our own projects off the ground. Considering the average age of the stadiums, there has to be an intervention.

“Inter and Milan presented a masterplan three years ago, that is still being discussed, and we this week handed in the latest version of the feasibility study to the council in Milan.

“This won’t just be a stadium, but an entertainment district that will benefit the entire city of Milan.”
