Benfica president: "Liverpool offer made it impossible to keep Nunez"

The Uruguayan forward who scored 48 goals from his 85 appearances for Benfica joined the Reds for a club-record fee of £64m that could rise to £88m. With Premier League rivals already showing interest in the 23-year-old, Anfield quickly became the only realistic landing spot for him.

With the new

Manchester United

boss Eric ten Hag traveling to Portugal to seal a move for their

Uruguayan

striker,

Jurgen Klopp

's side made an offer that neither Darwin Nunez and Benfica could reject as the 23-year-old striker joined

Liverpool

on a record £88m (€100m) deal.

Benfica president and former Milan player,

Rui Costa

admitted the Reds' €100 million transfer plan made it impossible for

Darwin Nunez

to remain at

Benfica

as the club was forced to sell their Uruguayan superstar.

He told

BTV

:<em>

“We are talking about one of the highest transfers of the market. We are still coming out of a pandemic situation, which held back the football market. Making a sale of €75+€25m is not open to discussion.

“The sale of Darwin is more than justified. There weren’t even conditions to keep him; it was completely impossible, for the values that came into the club and for what Darwin went on to earn.”

Scoring in his official debut for Liverpool against

Manchester City

and further scoring in his Premier League debut at

Fulham

, Darwin Nunez was in a good form until he was then shown a straight red card when he lost his cool against

Crystal Palace

.

After losing their Champions League opener to

Napoli

4-1, they will next face

Ajax

on Tuesday following the cancelation of this week's EFL games following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
