Beckham, Federer and Pele lead tributes to Queen Elizabeth II

The UK's longest-ruling monarch died peacefully in Balmoral, where members of the Royal Family went to be with her, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday. Since then, people worldwide have sent their condolences, and some of the biggest names in sports have used social media to do the same.

Beckham, who used to be the captain of the

men's football team, wrote on Instagram, "I'm genuinely saddened by the death of Her Majesty, The Queen. What an outpouring of love and respect we saw for her life of service at the Platinum Jubilee.

"The fact that we are all so sad today shows how much she meant to people in this country and all over the world. How much the way moved us, she led, and how she helped us through hard times. She served her country with dignity and grace until the end. This year, she would have known how much she was loved, and my thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family."

since the first time I met her in person in 1968 when she came to Brazil to see how much we love football and to feel the magic of a packed Maracana. Her deeds have marked generations. This will be remembered for all time."

After Roma's game against Ludogorets in the Europa League, Mourinho, the team's head coach, said, "I'm so sorry. My family lives in England, where I have lived for a long time. I don't think anyone doesn't like this wonderful woman."

We all knew the end was coming, but to me, our Queen was like a member of our family," wrote former boxing world champion, Frank Bruno. I was lucky and blessed to meet her a few times. She was the Matriarch, the mother of our nation. My thoughts are with the Royal Family on this sad day."
