Barkley departs Chelsea by mutual consent

Ross Barkley was one of the most promising youngsters, but the player has been released by the Blues.

Chelsea

have released

Ross Barkley

from his deal, with the player hitting free agency.

Barkley did not get a squad number for this season, having played in six Premier League matches last season.

The England international joined from Everton in 2018 but failed to solidify his place as a regular starter under the reign of Antonio Contee, Maurizio Sarri, Frank Lampard or Thomas Tuchel.

He played the 2020-21 season at Aston Villa on a loan contract and he was enjoying a promising partnership with Jack Grealish; however, his move was not turned prominent as his form tailed off.

The Blues confirmed that they reached a mutual agreement to cut ties with the 28-year-old, whose contract was to reach its end.

Barkley has been lined with a move to Everton and may be the first of many departures from Stamford Bridge this week, with Billy Gilmour, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah all attracting the attention of other clubs. Callum Hudson-Odoi is on the verge of joining Bayer Leverkusen on a loan contract.
