Dortmund’s Haller undergoes surgery after cancer diagnosis - Kehl

The Ivory Coast international will not play for a few months after his surgery.

Sebastian Haller

has undergone a surgery to remove a tumour, accordring to

Borussia Dortmund

’s sporting director

Sebastian Kehl

. The Ivory Coast forward was diagnosed with cancer this month.

The player, who made a move to the club from

Ajax

on a deal worth €34.5 million (£29m/$35m) this summer, will start his recovery after going under the knife.

Kehl provided an update on the 28-year-old’s operation.

"The operation went very, very well and he is on the right track,"

Kehl told 1&1.

"He was super stable and incredibly positive and also said to the team: 'Do your job, give everything. Make sure that when I come back, we're still in the running.' And the boys will do that too."

It has yet to be seen when the player will return to action for the Bundesliga side, but Kehl admitted: "

He will definitely be out for a few months."

Since Dortmund are not going to have his services for a few months, they are on the lookout to bring in a striker to replace him in the meantime.

Haller joined the club as Erling Haaland’s replacement after the Norwegian depart the Bundesliga side for Manchester City.

Kehl has said that BVB are also considering adding staff to coach Edin Terzic’s team before the start of the new season.

"We are preparing for different scenarios,"

he said.

"Edin, [CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke] and I are talking to the scouting department and working on different options and ideas. Nothing concrete at the moment."

Kehl added:

"Nevertheless, Haller is missing the profile. We're working on different options. But we'll only do something if it makes sense in the end."
