Newcastle complete signing of Nick Pope from Burnley

Nick Pope's move from Burnley to Newcastle for £10 million has been completed, and the England goalkeeper has signed a four-year deal.

The 30-year-old wanted to stay in the

Premier League

after

Burnley

was relegated to the Championship. He wanted to stay in Gareth Southgate's plans for England before the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

Nick Pope

, whose contract at Burnley only had one year left, will compete with

Martin Dubravka

for the No. 1 shirt at St. James' Park. The former Charlton goalkeeper is Eddie Howe's second summer signing. Earlier this month, left-back

Matt Targett

joined.

Pope said, "Now that I'm here, I'm excited to start. It took a couple of weeks for the deal to go through, but it was done very quickly once it did. I'm thrilled to be here and can't wait to start." Howe was happy to get his man because he had been looking to improve his goalkeeping team in January.

The manager of

Newcastle

said, "Nick is a great goalkeeper in the Premier League, and at the international level, so I'm thrilled to have strong competition in a very important spot."

This summer, a lot of clubs were interested in him, so I'd like to thank our owners and everyone else who helped us get ahead of the competition. I'm glad he's coming with us as we prepare for an exciting challenge."
