Newcastle complete signing of Nick Pope from Burnley
Nick Pope's move from Burnley to Newcastle for £10 million has been completed, and the England goalkeeper has signed a four-year deal.
The 30-year-old wanted to stay in the
Premier League
after
Burnleywas relegated to the Championship. He wanted to stay in Gareth Southgate's plans for England before the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
, whose contract at Burnley only had one year left, will compete with
Martin Dubravkafor the No. 1 shirt at St. James' Park. The former Charlton goalkeeper is Eddie Howe's second summer signing. Earlier this month, left-back
Matt Targett
joined.
Pope said, "Now that I'm here, I'm excited to start. It took a couple of weeks for the deal to go through, but it was done very quickly once it did. I'm thrilled to be here and can't wait to start." Howe was happy to get his man because he had been looking to improve his goalkeeping team in January.
The manager of
Newcastle
said, "Nick is a great goalkeeper in the Premier League, and at the international level, so I'm thrilled to have strong competition in a very important spot."
